Heavenly Bodies: A Writing Workshop for Women on Lopez Island, WA

heavenly bodiesI’m offering this FREE workshop as a part of my writing residency at Woodland Keep on Lopez Island in Washington (where I am finishing Lady Parts #2: The Anger Issue)!

Through our bodies, we experience the world’s most outrageous pleasures and most frustrating pains, and our relationships with our bodies determine how we experience the world. Celebrate, examine, heal, reminisce over and laugh about your relationship with your one and only body in this morning writing workshop for women. We’ll write and share stories in a safe, fun, honest and empowering space and leave with new perspectives on how to love our female bodies. We’ll incorporate herbal medicine (essential oils, tinctures and flower essences) into our writing practice, as well. (*Women of all ages and lifestyles, including cis and transgender women and nonbinary folks are welcome and encouraged to attend!) 

Bring a notepad and writing utensil
Tea and light snacks provided!

When: Saturday, May 20; 10am-1pm

Who: Dani Burlison

Dani Burlison is the author of Dendrophilia and Other Social Taboos: True Stories, a collection of essays which first appeared in her McSweeney’s Internet Tendency column of the same name, and LADY PARTS (available at Pioneers Press). She has been a staff writer at a Bay Area alt-weekly, a book reviewer for Los Angeles Review and a regular contributor at Chicago Tribune, KQED Arts and The Rumpus. Her writing can also be found at WIRED, Vice, Utne, Ploughshares, Hip Mama Magazine, Spirituality & Health Magazine, Made Local Magazine, Shareable, and more. She is an alumna of the Squaw Valley Community of Writers, Lit Camp and the Mendocino Coast Writers Conference and has upcoming work in various online and print publications. True Stories: A Writing Workshop with Dani Burlison

Do you have an idea brewing for a personal essay or memoir but missing the motivation to get it on paper? Do you already have a completed essay that you’d like to breathe some new life into? Are you in the beginning stages of writing your story but not sure which direction to take it? Whether you’re writing for your own pleasure or have a piece you’d like to send out for publication, this workshop is for you!

In this four-week class, we’ll discuss the art of the personal essay, and all that comes with it– vulnerability, issues with confidentiality, self-reflection, and more. We’ll also engage in writing activities and have opportunities to receive feedback and support with fine-tuning manuscripts.

Love, loss, travel, parenting, humor, tragedy– all topics welcome!

Dates: Thursdays, September 4, 11, 18, 25
When: 6:30pm – 9pm
Where: Undercover Baking Agency, 463 Sebastopol Ave, Santa Rosa (near Julliard Park)
Cost:$100- $175: Limited scholarships available

Through our bodies, we experience the world’s most outrageous pleasures and most frustrating pains, and our relationships with our bodies determine how we experience the world. Celebrate, examine, heal, reminisce over and laugh about your relationship with your one and only body in this evening writing workshop for women–just in time for Valentine’s Day. We’ll write and share stories in a safe, fun, honest and empowering space and leave with new perspectives on how to love our female bodies. (*Women of all ages and lifestyles, including transgender women are welcome and encouraged to attend!)

Clever, fun, supportive—and sometimes brash—our classes will help you to discover your own brilliant and unique voice. We offer workshops to inspire, instigate, and hone your craft. All levels welcome—from the beginning writer, who is just finding their voice, to those that have already established a writing practice

What can you expect from Petals and Bones Workshop?

- A supportive atmosphere meant to get the creative blood pumping, not intimidate
- Experienced facilitators with independent spirit
- Small class sizes
- A fun and intellectual atmosphere
- A chance to allow your creativity to reign supreme!

In this 4 week series, participants will engage with creativity through clever and though-provoking writing exercises and will receive positive feedback along with tidbits and ideas to keep the writing practice flowing throughout the week. Optional assignments and reading materials included.
